Withania Somnifera, better known as Ashwagandha is definitely one of the most popular herbs in the traditional system of Indian medicine, Ayurveda. Ashwagandha is best know for its stress-reducing, anti-cancerous and anti-inflammation properties. But could it be beneficial for treating thyroid disorders?
The thyroid gland is an essential part of our body and endocrine system which is in charge of regulating hormones and many organs in our bodies, like kidney, heart and liver. But it also plays an important role in metabolism, skin and immune systems. Some people suffer from hyperthyroidism, which is essentially an overproduction of hormones, whereas hypothyroidism represents a deficiency in hormones production. Some people with these conditions sometimes look for a natural solution and try to use Ashwagandha root powder to regulate their thyroid gland. One of the main reasons for this is that some components of Ashwagandha have a positive effect on glucose-6-phosphatase which may increase thyroid function.
According to studies on animals, Ashwagandha root powder may be able to stimulate thyroid hormones by increasing the serum concentration of thyroid hormones themselves. However, another study proved that too much of Aswagandha root may lead to thyrotoxicosis. This basically means that someone with hyperthyroidism will temporarily become hypothyroidism sufferer and vice versa. Still, many are saying that Ashwagandha helps them reduce some symptoms of hypothyroidism like decreased sexual function and libido as well as chronic fatigue. But most would agree that using Ashwagandha for longer periods wouldn’t be the best idea, as there still isn’t enough scientific evidence to support its chronic use. Like with every other natural supplement, make sure to consult your specialist before taking Ashwagandha for thyroid problems.
Even though Ashwagandha root powder may not be the best choice for treating Thyroid gland conditions, it is certainly one of the best natural ways to ease up drug withdrawal, reduce anxiety and help treat arthritis.
