We recently received an odd lab test result, and in our commitment to transparency, wanted to fill you in on the details.
This has to do with our new Elk Velvet Antler, specifically the capsules.
Our original testing came back with no problems at all. We do that testing long before we ever release anything.
However, in the second batch that went in to the lab, the microbiology came back with a yellow flag of “Suspect” on “E.coli bacteria”
After seeing this we immediately put it in for more testing.
The primary difference between Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria and pathogenic E. coli bacteria lies in their ability to cause disease.
You see, E. coli is a diverse group of bacteria that includes both harmless and harmful strains.
1. Harmless E. coli: Most strains of “E. coli” are harmless and naturally reside in the intestines of humans and animals, where they play a crucial role in the intestinal flora balance and are essential for a healthy digestive system. These non-pathogenic strains can even contribute to the production of vitamin K2 and prevent the establishment of pathogenic bacteria within the intestine.
2. Pathogenic E. coli: However, some strains of E. coli are pathogenic and can cause illnesses, ranging from mild gastroenteritis to life-threatening conditions. Pathogenic E. coli strains have acquired specific virulence factors that enable them to cause disease. These virulence factors include toxins, such as Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC), which can cause severe foodborne illness, and other factors that allow them to adhere to intestinal cells, invade tissues, and evade the host’s immune response.
As you can see in the further test result, there was no pathogenic E. coli shown.
Perhaps some contamination happened along the way, though of a harmless variety. Perhaps the test just got it wrong.
Scared us for a moment, but such is the case with testing that such false positives sometimes show up.
Again, we share this in our commitment to quality and transparency.
