Maca vs. Tongkat Ali [Which One Works Best?]

Last updated on April 16, 2026

Maca vs. Tongkat Ali [Which One Works Best?]

Biggest Differences in Effects

Tongkat Ali is certainly one of the top hormone-supporting herbs that we have available for sale here at Lost Empire Herbs. It’s very effective at getting into the system and helping your body not only to up-regulate testosterone production but also to keep it freely available. Among other things, that means some great sexual health benefits!

It’s got a large body of science (for an herb anyway) backing up it’s effects in humans for things like testosterone and sexual function. Here’s one such meta-analysis, but more can be found in the references in our product page.

It is so strong that in fact, it is too strong for some people.

Maca is known as a great energy enhancer as well as an all-natural aid in boosting libido. Some speculate that it’s also helping in testosterone production for this effect but several studies actually reveals that that’s not the way it’s working. The libido enhancement comes without any change to testosterone or other levels.

Maca vs Tongkat Ali

Tongkat Ali vs. Maca on Taste

Maca is an amazing root and one that actually tastes good. I personally love its malty flavor.

I don’t, however, love the taste of Tongkat Ali. It’s extremely bitter, most likely because it’s so concentrated at 100:1 and it’s full of those bitter components, whereas we’re just grinding up the Maca root and delivering it to you. But even the root itself is far more bitter. Our Tongkat Ali Spagyric Tincture isn’t nearly as concentrated but still has an extremely bitter taste.

Black Maca vs Tongkat Ali Root on Dosage

As you can imagine, the dose between these two is also very different.

Tongkat Ali Dose

Because of the 100:1 extract strength we talked about earlier, very small doses of Tongkat Ali are needed. A tiny little spoon is included in the package to help you take the proper dose.

We also have capsules available with this and the newer Tongkat Ali Spagyric Tincture. A dropperful is still a pretty small dose.

Maca Dose

Meanwhile, with Maca many people aren’t going to feel the beneficial effects unless they’re doing a much higher dosage. In fact, we recommend 1 tbsp of Maca per day, perhaps even more than that depending on the individual.

It’s important to understand that this root is consumed as a food in Peru and surrounding areas where it’s grown. In those countries, it’s just another food item, and as such, there’s no need to be careful about the dosing as you would with other herbal supplements and concentrated extracts like Tongkat Ali.

It’s quite likely at a higher dose of Maca that you’ll note those enjoyable energetic effects and “getting in the mood” much more whereas a small dose works best for Tongkat Ali in those specific functions.

So which one is better?

You can’t really say that one is better than the other. Why?

Because with each one you’re likely pursuing different objectives or goals and they both work differently.

  1. I would say if you’re looking for hormone health specifically, Tongkat Ali is the winner.
  2. If you’re looking for libido then it’s hard to say. Each works through very different mechanisms there so both are worth trying, even combining.
  3. If you’re looking for energy, again because of very different pathways, both are worth trying, even combining.

Ultimately, the effects that you feel with each of these herbs is going to determine which one is best for you individually.

Can Maca and Tongkat Ali be combined?

Absolutely! Some users report optimal results by taking Tongkat Ali and Maca together.

You can even combine them then to combat a lot of the bitterness of the Tongkat Ali with the enjoyable, malty flavor of the tablespoon of the Maca!

We have a lot more information throughout this site on both herbs and we invite you to explore that content for more details.

We don’t have a post covering these three head to head, but you can check out the following for more details on how they each stack up compared to each other.

Summary

Overall, I’d say Maca is excellent for helping with energy and libido.

Tongkat Ali is one of the best, stronger herbs for regulating hormones and a lot of good things that result from doing so.

Combine them, take them separately and experiment with dose to find what works best for you!

  1. How much Tongkat Ali powder to water am I supposed to mix per serving?

    1. Logan Christopher

There’s no right answer. Some might want a full glass of water so that the taste is less intense. Others might want to get it over and done with so a shot or less would be best for that.

  2. I guess that if you really want the full effect then go for tongkat ali but if you want to enjoy the taste then you should go for Maca.
