Schisandra: The Adaptogenic “All-Systems” Berry*
Clinically-Studied “Five-Flavor Fruit” with a 40+ Year Russian Research Legacy, that Supports Energy, Cognition, the Liver, Immunity, Metabolism, Hormones, and Even More*

There are herbs that soothe. Herbs that stimulate. Herbs that target one organ. Schisandra is different. It’s a berry with a range that touches on virtually every part of the body. It’s a complete formula unto itself.
That’s why it shows up again and again in both traditional use and modern research. Traditional herbalism revered its wide range of effects. Russian researchers made it official, with Schisandra being one of the herbs that the term “adaptogen” was coined for. Modern research in the West is just starting to scratch its multifaceted surfaces across a range of human trials.
The Ancient Lore of Schisandra
The Divine Farmer’s Classic of the Materia Medica (Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing) lists Schisandra as among the superior herbs, saying that it would “prolong the years of life without aging.”*
Often also spelled schizandra and known in China as Wu Wei Zi, it is known as a top herb to support healthy aging in Chinese medicine, Schisandra chinensis is said to enter into every meridian channel in the body, once again a quite unique claim to fame.*
It works on the five elements: water, wood, fire, earth, and metal, supporting a wide range of the body’s systems, though is most known for supporting the liver, brain, kidneys, and lungs.*
And it contains all three treasures; Jing, Qi, and Shen, making this one herb a formula unto itself.*

Adaptogen – Your “Schisandra Stress Shield”*
Adaptogens’ job isn’t to force you up or down, it’s to help your body normalize under stress and protect your performance when life applies pressure.
In the research literature, the stress-protective effect of adaptogens is tied to regulation of homeostasis, especially through pathways connected to the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, the master system that sets your stress rhythm, energy output, and recovery signals.*1

What this means to you is more capacity. More stability. Better output with less breakdown. And it’s nothing like caffeine or other stimulants with the classic liabilities, including tolerance, rebound, sleep disruption, or that “comedown” feeling.
- A wide range of Russian research showed increased endurance and mental performance in people with reductions in fatigue over taking Schisandra for 2 to 10 weeks.*1-3
- Even a single dose of Schisandra supported mental performance and physical working capacity in humans.*4
- Schisandra has long been noted for supporting the body’s natural resilience to a wide range of physical and environmental stressors, including: heat shock, burns, extreme cold, immobilization, heavy exertion under load, low-pressure environments, inflammation, irradiation, and heavy metal intoxication.*3
- In two different trials with older adults (50+), 12 weeks of Schisandra extract was associated with better knee extensor or quadricep strength versus placebo, showing real world effects in physical training.*5,6

To put it in other terms, Schisandra supports your body and mind to build resilience.* Schisandra’s adaptogenic profile is strongly linked to its lignan complex (with schisandrin/schisandrin B among the major compounds). These and other compounds help support:
- HPA axis modulation and stress mediator regulation*1,2
- Antioxidant and healthy inflammation modulation*1,2
- Reported changes in cortisol baseline levels*1,2
Schisandra’s Nootropic Effects*
I can personally feel the effects of Schisandra right away, in how it sharpens the mind.* Pop some powder in my mouth, and it’s like the mind tightens up with the mostly sour and astringent taste.*
Schisandra’s lignans aren’t locked out of the brain. In animal research, schisandrin B (one of the most abundant lignans) has been shown to cross the blood–brain barrier, which helps explain why Schisandra is repeatedly studied for its support of cognition.7 Some of its effects include:
- Oxidative stress buffering (brain tissue is oxidation-sensitive)*8,9
- Supporting healthy neuroinflammation*8,9
- Supporting neuroprotection*8,9
- Supporting neurotransmitter and BDNF-related pathway modulation*8,9
One of the most compelling angles is that Schisandra doesn’t only act “top-down” through the brain, it also supports “bottom-up” via the gut, helping to shape the gut-brain axis.*7 The gut effects covered later matter for your brain too.

Schisandra Supports the Liver, including Phase I and II Detoxification*
Schisandra’s lignans have been observed to interact with the same enzyme networks the liver uses to transform and clear compounds from the body.*10
- Phase I (activation/transformation): Schisandra lignans can support the activity of cytochrome P450 pathways (notably CYP3A4/CYP2C9).*10
- Phase II (conjugation/neutralization): Multiple lignans, such as Schizandrin C, have been shown to support antioxidants such as glutathione.*10
To put it simply, Schisandra supports the liver’s ability to process and neutralize chemical toxins efficiently.10
Meanwhile, it also helps to protect liver tissue under oxidative or inflammatory stress.* A systematic review of animal studies found Schisandra compounds were associated with significant improvements in liver stress markers.*11
Why Schisandra Feels Like Clean Power – Mitochondrial Capacity and Effects on Metabolism*
Mitochondria are the powerhouses of your cells, yet for many people, they’re falling behind. A mitochondria-focused review describes Schisandra fruits/extracts and their constituents as helping restore impaired mitochondrial function, acting as mitoprotective agents.*12
This matters for real people, too. In a 12-week randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial in people taking Schisandra, the group showed improvements across multiple metabolic markers, including healthy glucose and normal insulin levels.*13
Schisandra can help deliver more mitochondrial and metabolic steadiness with less energy volatility.*

Immunomodulation Through the Gut*
Schisandra supports immune regulation, and a big part of that happens through the gut ecosystem, where much of immune signaling is trained.*
In a 12-week double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in women, Schisandra supplementation was associated with changes in gut microbiota, with notable correlations between specific bacteria and fat mass.*14
Other research has shown that Schisandra can increase beneficial genera like Akkermansia and Bifidobacterium, which are commonly associated with healthier gut-barrier and inflammatory signaling.*15
These matter not just for your gut or your immune system. They matter for your brain too. Work on the microbiota–gut–brain axis suggests Schisandra extracts, when they shift microbiota, can increase short-chain fatty acids (like butyrate/propionate).*7

Hormonal & Menopausal Support*
In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial evaluating Schisandra extract for menopausal symptoms, the Schisandra group showed favorable changes in total symptom scores, with particular benefits noted for symptoms like hot flushes, sweating, and heart palpitations.*16
All of this is done through the various effects mentioned above. And while it is only from rat research, there is the intriguing idea that Schisandra could help modulate the hormone prolactin.*17 This hormone can creep too high in both men and women, which can cause issues with testosterone and progesterone.*

Shen, Skin, Anti-Aging and Beauty-From-Within*
It’s interesting that herbs that help support Shen, that is, the spirit and mind, tend to also be herbs that help support beauty.* It’s like that inner beauty is reflected outwards.
Schisandra has long been renowned in China, especially by women, for its role in supporting radiant aging and beauty benefits, specifically, for improving skin condition.* It can be used both internally and externally for these purposes.
This appears to be primarily due to its antioxidant and inflammation-modulating properties.*18
The gut and liver are a huge part of detox. Toxins are released and eliminated through the skin. Therefore, when the liver is functioning properly, the skin will naturally clear up.
Our Schisandra Quality
Unfortunately, the USA-grown Schisandra is no longer available. Everyone who took it loved this amazing Schisandra, but unfortunately, with the death of the man who started it, the farm was ultimately destroyed.
The good news is we think we’ve found the next best thing to take its place.
Most of the Schisandra berries and powders available on the market are heavily oxidized. This is because the berries do not handle transportation and storage so well in their raw state. While it may still be good, it doesn’t contain all the power that fresh Schisandra berries can deliver.
This is organic Schisandra chinensis, grown in China. While there are other species sometimes available (such as Schisandra sphenanthera), ours is the primary species that is used and studied. After harvesting, the berries are dried and ground up. This powder delivers the full spectrum of nutrients found in the berries, including the seeds.
As with all our herbs, it passes independent lab testing with flying colors.
Dosing and How to Take
Recommended starting dose is ¼ to ½ tsp daily. (This is approximately 1.8 to 3.5 grams. At this dose, each 50-gram bag will last about 2 to 4 weeks.)
Try taking Schisandra straight, stirring it into hot water for tea, or mixing it into various shakes or smoothies.
Watch out for oxidation. Please keep your Schisandra in the package and away from air, light, and heat as much as possible to preserve its freshness.

Take the 100 Day Schisandra Challenge
Ron Teeguarden, a premiere tonic herbalist in the West, said that when he first was introduced to the herbs, his teacher told him to take Schisandra for 100 days straight without fail to transform his life. Schizandra was also the favorite herb of this teacher, Taoist Grand Master Sung Jin Park.
Simply take X teaspoon (approximately X gram) mixed in water or other liquids for 100 days and enjoy all the many wonderful benefits of this single herb. (Note: It doesn’t require 100 days of consumption to feel the benefits.)

Contraindications and Side Effects
Schisandra is generally described in all the research as well-tolerated and not associated with serious side effects when used appropriately.
Schisandra can be stimulating, so it is best not taken before bed. Mornings and afternoons work for most.
Schisandra should not be used while pregnant, as historically it was used to induce labor. It is also not recommended to use while breastfeeding.
While Schisandra helps to support the immune system, classically, it is recommended to avoid taking Schisandra when you have a common cold or flu because it has astringent properties that can hold moisture in the body.*
Schisandra can be combined with any other herbs.
