A Cardiotonic Formula to Build a Stronger, More Resilient Heart and Cardiovascular System
Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, one of about every four deaths. Cardiovascular disease claims one life every 36 seconds.
So I ask, how healthy is your heart?
The heart is more than a pump. It regulates blood flow. It’s part of the endocrine system that releases hormones. It’s part of the nervous system sending more information to the brain than it receives. It creates a field that is either coherent or incoherent.
There are reasons to focus on the physical heart itself, and the biochemical pathways that give rise to dis-ease in the cardiovascular system.
And there are reasons to think of the energetic heart too.
While modern man thinks of their consciousness as emanating from the head, ancient cultures and indigenous people the world over would point to the heart as where they reside.
This is where we see anxiety, nervousness, a constricted heart, and more play across both our thoughts and emotions.
Herbs don’t just work biochemically but have further actions across the system. This is even more true with Spagyric extracts, meant to touch on the entire system holistically.
Just think about this. Have you ever heard someone say that a person died of heartbreak?
Or the common sayings about a “hardened heart”, due to setbacks and disappointments in life. Is this just a turn of phrase, or is there some parallel to the hardening of the arteries in atherosclerosis?
This new formula not only enhances your physical system, but so much more. It is calming and mildly cooling, lessening stress across the system. It features five herbs:
• Hawthorn
• Linden
• Rose
• Chrysanthemum
• Motherwort
About Hawthorn
Use of Hawthorn in helping to support the cardiovascular system dates back to at least 659 AD. This berry is rich in ogliomeric procyanidins.
It’s been studied to improve endothelial function, help support the rhythm of the heartbeat, and more. It helps protect the heart from ischemic damage and reperfusion injury. It even helps support nitric oxide synthesis.
Clinical trials have found that Hawthorn can help the restoration of healthy blood pressure levels.
A specific trademarked formula, WS® 1442, is well researched for its benefits. This extract of the leaves and flowers is prescribed in Germany for mild heart failure because of its positive effects with little to no side effects.
In Chinese medicine, Hawthorn is said to tonify the spleen helping with digestion and blood circulation.
Energetically, it’s said to help with protection and healing of the heart, helping to enhance openness, the giving and receiving of love.
About Linden
The Linden tree came to be a symbol of love, compassion and wisdom from Greek mythology. It is the tree in which the centaur Chiron taught under.
Linden is a gentle nervine that can help with nervousness, muscle tension and anxious thoughts. Part of this may have to do with binding to GABA and benzodiazepine receptors.
There are many compounds in Linden. One of which, kaempferol has been shown to have effects against atherosclerosis.
It is traditionally also used as an antispasmodic. These gentle actions have seen it be helpful for angina and heart palpitations.
“Linden opens the emotional and spiritual heart even as it improves cardiovascular circulation… linden has a divinely inspired way of opening you to the bliss of your true multidimensional nature – the larger reality we’re all part of.”
– Robin Rose Bennett, The Gift Of Healing Herbs
About Rose
Much attention gets paid to rose hips, but less so to the flowers and buds. Yet these later have a rich history of medicinal use, over 5,000 years.
Hawthorn is in the same family as Rose, and thus they may share some similar benefits due to similar bioflavonoids.
The rose oil (of which a tincture will extract in small amounts) has been shown to have pain relieving, relaxation increasing and anxiety dispelling effects.
Rose buds and flowers have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and astringent properties. These work on the physical heart but Rose is considered much more of an energetic heart tonic.
I have had quite the experience in communion with the Wild Rose as I tell in Powered By Nature. So I have a special affinity for this amazing plant.
About Chrysanthemum
Chrysanthemum flowers have long been used in TCM, as one of the most popular herbs for the cardiovascular system.
Shen Nong’s Canon of Materia Medica said it was a “superior herb, the use of which prolongs life.” It aids in blood flow and cleansing, works on the Liver meridian, and supports the eyes.
It is said to calm down the Yang energy, which is excessive in many with heart problems. Think of the stereotypical Type A man that has a heart attack while working 16 hours days.
Some preliminary research has backed up the blood pressure modulating effects and improvements in the endothelium.
Like most herbs there’s also antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects.
About Motherwort
The Latin name for Motherwort is Leonurus cardiaca. The second word there speaks to the function of Motherwort on the heart system.
Research shows that “cardiovascular diseases are often associated with an alteration of mitochondria, the main producers of ATP in cardiac muscle cells.”
One study looked at Motherwort’s constituents, such as chlorogenic acid, orientin, quercetin, hyperoside, and rutin, for having positive effects on mitochondria.
Like Linden, Motherwort extracts showed GABA receptor binding activity. Motherwort has further cardiotonic effects. It has weak phytoestrogens, though most of its actions on the hormone system are likely from its stress relieving effects.
It’s strength as a bitter nervine combined with the above has shown that it is especially useful in nervous cardiac conditions.
Quality and Processing
Both Rose and Hawthorn have five petals per flower, inspiration for making this a five-herb formula. The formula contains:
40% Hawthorn Berry Spagyric Extract
20% Linden Spagyric Extract
15% Rose Spagyric Extract
15% Chrysanthemum Spagyric Extract
10% Motherwort Spagyric Extract
All ingredients are organic.
The Hawthorn berries (Crataegus monogyna) and Linden (Tilia europaea) are sourced from Albania. The Rose (Rosa centifolia) is sourced from Egypt. The Chrysanthemum (Chrysanthemum morifolium) flowers are white and sourced from China. The Motherwort (Leonurus cardiaca) is sourced from the United States.
These are each individually tinctured for over six weeks in a menstruum made with:
- Organic Cane Alcohol 40% ABV
- Filtered Fresh Spring Water
After pressing the ingredients, they’re calcined and ground down into a fine white powder, then further extracted with distilled water and a gentle evaporation process until crystals are formed. These purified “salts” are added back into the tincture to finish the spagyric process.
Each spagyric tincture is then mixed according to the ratios listed above.
The taste is sweet and fruity, with bitter undertones. Most people used to herbal tinctures will say it’s quite a nice flavor.
Recommended Dosage
We recommend starting with a half dropper twice per day. You may modify up and down as you best see fit.
This formula is very gentle. I even give it to my three-year-old daughter sometimes.
Contraindications
Not recommended for use during pregnancy. Motherwort is known to stimulate uterine contractions and can possibly lead to miscarriage.
Some of these herbs are untested for breastfeeding.
Hawthorn may slow blood clotting and increase the risks of bleeding. Please discontinue use two weeks before scheduled surgery.
Since these herbs have some similar effects of medications for heart health such as high blood pressure, blood flow, etc. please talk with your doctor or herbal practitioner about combining with these herbs.
