Cistanche is one of our top sellers here at Lost Empire Herbs. As you continue to read, you’ll come to understand why.
While most known for its sexual benefits, this desert plant has a wide range of other benefits:*

- Increased Antioxidant Capability (Supports Glutathione)*
Protecting the Bones*
“Probably the best herb I have used so far! I’m 69 years old and it has sure brought back a lot of youthfulness to my life! Thank You for this one!” – Earl
Here is one version of this legendary story:
In 1190, Genghis Khan’s army was locked in what came to be known as the ‘Battle of the Thirteen Wings’ as he sought to unify Mongolia. His army was trapped on a plateau, fatigued and demoralized.
White horses then came down from the heavens of which the Khan and his men slit their throats. Blood spilled on the ground, from which sprang Cistanche. The army consumed this, replenishing their strength and vitality. After this sign from god, they went on to be victorious.
In addition to this legend, it is said that Genghis Khan consumed Cistanche daily. His stamina and the spread of his genes are said to have made 8% of Asia’s population his descendants. This is one in 200 men worldwide!
“It helps put the “man” back in manhood. I can see Ghenghis Khan knocking off women and populating 1/8th of Asia as a result. Confidence doesn’t even describe what this herb does.” – Derrick C from Pennsylvania
The “Desert Ginseng” has Long Historical Use
Also known as Desert Ginseng or Rou Cong Rong in Chinese Cistanche has a rich history. It was first listed as a tonic herb in Shen Nong’s Herbal Classic 2000 years ago.
The Ben Cao Gang Mu of 1619 recorded that Cistanche invigorated the kidney, strengthened and nourished marrow and essence, protected semen, and moistened dryness to relax the bowels.1*
In The Essence of Medical Prescriptions, a Chinese physician in the tenth-century, had many formulas designed to help with male performance and potency.* Of these, a whopping 80% contained Cistanche.
Cistanche according to TCM
- Yang Jing
- Kidney Herb
- Large Intestine Herb
- Promotes Blood*
- Warming and Moistening
- Sweet and Salty
- Directs Blood Flow to Pelvic and Genital Area*
- Most revitalizing when used continuously for some time
The different species of Cistanche are used interchangeably, having been found to contain mostly the same compounds and actions. This includes Cistanche tubulosa, Cistanche deserticola, Cistanche salsa and Cistanche sinensis. Our extract is made exclusively of Cistanche tubulosa.
Despite its great historical usage, science is still fairly limited with few human trials. Most research thus far has been done on rats, mice, and cells.
The Renown Sexual Benefits of Cistanche*
One can even notice the phallic shape it has (that’s called The Doctrine of Signatures)…
One double-blind placebo-controlled human trial involved Cistanche but was also mixed with several other herbs, including Horny Goat Weed.3
Those taking the herbs had a statistically significant increase in erectile function.*
There were also increases in orgasmic function, sexual desire, and satisfaction though these were not statistically significant.*
“Cistanche in combination with Pine Pollen has my equipment functioning perfectly.” – David Goodwill
“Saw improvements in erection quality.” – Bernard Williams
Echinacoside, one of the phenylethanoid glycosides, possesses vaso-relaxing activity. This includes some of the effects involving the “NO-cGMP signal transduction pathway, with increasing cGMP levels in the corpus cavernosum smooth muscle.” *2
In layman’s terms, this is helping blood flow to the genitals with nitric oxide effects.*
“Provides the necessary nitrate oxide boost along with the beet powder I take for performance. I notice a difference in quality of erections when not taking this product.” – Bruce Frame
Several rat studies have found increases in sperm count and sperm motility.*4,5
One study specifically caused damage to the testicles and sperm from BPA, commonly found in many plastics, and found the Cistanche extracts were protective from this.5 *
“Cistanche does everything it purports to do. It definitely increases my sexual energies which translates to better performance.” – Kenneth Middleton Jr.
This is why Cistanche is one of the ingredients in our Thor’s Hammer Potency Formula.
Also known as Desert Ginseng or Rou Cong Rong in Chinese, Cistanche has a rich history.
Is it Really a “Stalk Enlarger”?
No science has looked directly at this effect, but here we can look at anecdotal evidence. Here’s what some customers are saying…
“This Cistanche is AMAZING. It actually DOES add girth.” – Mark G.
Robert Kirsch
CP
David A. Bess
Rich Hertz
“Been using cisthance for a month and man am I THRILLED Im 65 and going like 16 also hanging longer and thicker than ever my wife is thrilled”
Of course, this effect does not work for everyone. I believe we get a lot of one-star reviews because some men are looking for this effect solely and are not happy when it doesn’t show up.
“It was described as the “stalk enhancer” because of the increased blood flow. Been through two bags and have one more in stock to use. If I get the same results that the others have given me, this one will be dropped from my personal protocol. Realize now that because this did not work for me does not mean the same for you.” – Eugene F.
“I tried it and felt no difference” – Joseph Howard
Cistanche Improves Testosterone
and Other Hormones*
Based on how people are feeling when they take Cistanche, there’s a very good chance that it is helping to optimize hormones. However, the research on this is preliminary at best. Some rat research has seen increases in both progesterone and testosterone.4*
More research found Cistanche modified gene expression of enzymes key to hormone health.*2 These included 3β-HSD responsible for synthesis of testosterone and 5α-reductase responsible for DHT or dihydrotestosterone.
“This supplement is probably the best supplement I have ever had in terms of its effects on my quality of life and overall sense of well being. I felt an increase in my vitality, I wouldnt get tired at work, and I didnt feel tired, overly stressed or defeated at the end of the day. I noticed improvements after about 16 days of taking it.” – Quirino Brescia
Cistanche May Act as a SARM*
Perhaps most intriguing is the evidence pointing to Cistanche, specifically the echinacosides it contains, acting as a natural Selective Androgen Receptor Modulator or SARM.*
As the name implies, SARMs are compounds that selectively target and activate androgen receptors in the body. Such tissues include skeletal muscle and bone while avoiding activation in other tissues, such as the prostate gland. They are “selective” in that way.
It’s another rat study, but this one found that echinacosides:6
- Enhanced sperm quantity.*
- Increased testosterone and luteinizing hormone levels in both blood and the pituitary and testicles, as shown in the graph above.*
- Increased the expression of key steroidogenic enzymes in the testis. These enzymes are responsible for sex hormone conversions from cholesterol to testosterone.*
- Can cross the blood-brain barrier and, to a lesser extent, the blood-testis barrier. This means it gets access to these important areas to act on them.*
- Increased the expressions of HPG-axis-related genes. This is epigenetics in action.*
- Lowers BPA-induced reproductive damage; therefore, it is endocrine-disrupting chemical protective.
Although the sexual and hormonal benefits may be what many people take Cistanche for, however it doesn’t stop there.
“Have been using cistanche for many years. I use it with black maca and tongkat ali and I believe it helps with my testosterone levels. I am in my mid 70’s.” – Dave
Cistanche is Anti-Fatigue, Supporting Mitochondrial Function and Energy*
One mouse study found an anti-fatigue effect with decreased muscle damage and improved energy storage.7*
Another mouse study found that Cistanche “stimulated the ATP-generation capacity in mitochondria… with induction of glutathione antioxidant status,” which also protected the heart.8* Glutathione is the master antioxidant in the human body.
Maintaining mitochondrial function is a key to anti-aging. Protecting it was found in various studies on Cistanche’s compounds echinacosides, as well as tubuloside B.2*
“It really balances my body out and recover from a hard day at work.” – Fred Collins
Cistanche Preserves Cognitive Function*
In one of the few human trials with Cistanche, patients with moderate cognitive decline were given Cistanche for 48 weeks.9
The study was small, but overall, Cistanche was found to be effective. Ten of the seventeen patients saw improvement in the Alzheimer’s Disease Assessment Scale–cognitive subscale.* Overall, the patients were stable rather than further cognitive decline.
This study goes on to state that what separates Cistanche from many others is its ability “to inhibit excessive apoptosis of nerve cells.”*
Reviews on Cistanche for neurodegeneration have found:*10,11
- Neuroprotective Capabilities*
- Protecting Neural Mitochondria*
- Antioxidant Capabilities in the Nervous System*
- Reduced Neural Inflammation*
- Regulates Autophagy*
One specific mouse study found that Cistanche “stimulated NGF secretion, increased neuronal cell differentiation, neurite length, and synapse formation: which led to significantly enhanced learning and memory”.12*
“This one helps me to be focused more to be honest” – Javier Silva
Cistanche is Immunomodulatory and Anti-Aging*
As if all that is not enough, Cistanche also helps support the immune system in various ways.*
Cistanche can activate lymphoid cells, support T cells, and is rich in polysaccharides that regulate cellular immunity.2* An extract was found to lower immune-related senescence and extend the lifespan in mice.2*
Another study found that the aceteosides in Cistanche upregulated interferon expression and T cells. 13* These, in turn, were found to boost cellular immunity against respiratory viruses.*
A human trial involving a blend of herbs – including Cistanche – found significant improvements in aging symptoms, including improving endocrine and immune functions.14*
Another double-blind clinical trial analyzed people with trouble walking and general mobility by taking exclusively Cistanche or a placebo. Those taking the Cistanche extract improved their walking ability.15* Furthermore, there were no adverse effects.
More research has found that echinacosides are DNA-protective and help support bone formation.16*
Cistanche For Working Out
Those herbs that help with sex tend to help with anything athletic for obvious reasons:
- Increased Blood Flow
- Hormonal Support
- Anti-Fatigue and Mitochondrial Support
- Supporting Nervous System
These are why Cistanche makes its way into our Hercules Pre-Workout Formula.
No science has been checked here, but our customers are certainly running experiments themselves…
“Noticed increased endurance during workouts.” – Michael Martinez
“It makes me stronger every day” – Clint Deshotel
“Works well I use before a work out and it Amazing!!!” – James Flood
“Best product I have ever used for strength and stamina. I will take this for the rest of my life.” – Ted Etheredge
How Can One Herb Help with So Much? Looking at the Bigger Picture…
One other interesting human trial with Cistanche deserves mention here. This looked at the use of Cistanche for people with tinnitus who had chronic nephritis, that is, inflammation of the kidneys. Those taking Cistanche had better measures for tinnitus, loudness, and annoyance, which helped with sleep and more.17*
In Chinese medicine, tinnitus is linked to the Kidney meridian. The Kidneys are seen as the storehouse of Jing, also known as “Primal Essence.”
This Yang energy can be used not just for sex or fitness but also for any creative endeavor.
The tonifying action works across systems, like the reproductive, neurological, endocrine, and the blood and fluids of the body. In this way, while being a Yang herb, it helps in cases of Yin Deficiency, which is common with aging. Unlike many herbs, it is both warming and moistening at the same time, which allows for this.
“Pricey but I get multiple positive results from Cistanche! Blood flow for sure and helps low back for me.” – Alan Brown
In Chinese medicine, low back pain and knee pain are common signs of Kidney deficiency.
It is a strong and grounding herb. Some have likened neurological decline to the spirit leaving the body little by little. Cistanche, supporting Jing, helps to pull it back in. It can be thought of as grounding you into your nerves, blood and bones.*
Cistanche helps to support your vessel. And that is why it can help in so many areas and functions.
Cistanche’s Bowel Support*
Galactitol is a monosaccharide found in Cistanche, that possesses some laxative activity.2* But don’t worry, it’s not strong in this action.
Beyond the Kidneys, in Chinese medicine, Cistanche helps the Large Intestine. Its important action brings moistening to the colon, which is useful especially to seniors where constipation is common.*
This gentle action should not be forgotten when thinking of the immune and anti-aging effects of Cistanche as everything depends on the gut.*
Cistanche for Women
There are no herbs that are strictly for men or women, however herbs certainly lean one way or the other in reputation. Cistanche is mostly well-known as a man’s herb as is evidenced by the reviews on this page.
But sexual, hormonal, anti-aging, immunity, neuroprotective and more benefits are certainly things that women want and need too! For all these reasons, women may find this herb every bit as useful as men.
Here’s our single female review, but we hope to get more in the future…
“I have been taking Cistanche for about a month. Directed by my Dr. to build my immune system. I feel great, I believe it has benefitted my overall health. After reading many of these reviews, my hubby also takes it. I believe he has benefited from it also. I am a firm believer in quality organics herbs and vitamins and feel this is a fair price for a good product.” – Hubette

How to Take Cistanche Extract
Cistanche Tincture:
1 dropperful daily. For the best results hold under the tongue for 30-60 seconds.
Cistanche Powder:
The recommended dosage is one to two grams, or 1/2 to 1 teaspoon, per day.
This is typically mixed in water, tea, coffee or other drinks.
You can also take it straight and allow for absorption in your mouth, as one customer recommends here…
“This is a high quality product that is well worth the money. Yes, it is on the pricier side, but believe me, it does not disappoint. Once you have gotten used to the taste, I would try holding the powder in your mouth until it slowly dissolves. I feel the effects much faster and better this way as opposed to just chugging it down with water, but who knows. I’ve been taking this approach of consumption now with all herb powders of Lost Empire.” – John Johnson
Some customers have found that results are best when cycling use of the herb, that is pausing it for some time then laying off for some time. As always, we recommend you experiment and find what works for you.
“Along with horny goat weed, my favorite herb for male hormones. I really notice when I take this (no more than once per week).” – Mark D.
“Great stuff but have to cycle body becomes accustomed” – Ethan Baker

“Couldn’t stomach the product. Provided major stomach ache and headache. No noticeable affects and couldn’t find any other way to stomach this product.” Alejandro Morales
“Taste leaves a lot to be desired. But the product works.” – Richard Stoney
So be prepared for a strong taste that you may not like at all.
New! Cistanche Spagyric Tincture
The Cistanche used for this tincture come from China. Before tincturing, the Cistanche is prepared by drying, then tinctured for over six weeks in a menstruum made with:
- Organic Cane Alcohol 40% ABV
- Distilled Spring Water
After pressing the Cistanche stems, they’re calcined and ground down into a fine, then further extracted with distilled water and a gentle evaporation process until crystals are formed. These purified “salts” are added back into the tincture to finish the process.
In Chinese Medicine, the color BLACK is associated with the energy JING. This tincture is a deep beautiful black color.
The taste is extremely SALTY, associated with the Water element and Kidney meridian. There is also some sweetness to it as well. It is an acquired taste!
Some people may find that the powdered extract works better for them. Others, like myself, prefer tinctures for their ease of use.
“I definitely like it more than the powder. Of the things I am trying and have results from, this one is a keeper.” – Dennis L Miller
“This Tincture works very, very well for me, Wow! You can throw out your Viagra because Cistanche works much better without the side effects.” – Jay Meeboer
“Easily tolerable for those who have sensitive stomachs (namely toward the powder variety). Strong antiviral and immune boosting qualities without aggravating personal autoimmune condition. Not as potent in terms of reproductive health relative to the powder, but still provides a significant and immediate boost. Product is a one stop shop, an essential herb.“ – A.K.
Tincture Recommended Dosage
The recommended dosage is one dropper daily. This comes in a one-fluid-ounce bottle, so there are about 40 droppers per bottle.
At the recommended dose a bottle will last about 40 days.
This dose is just a starting point. You can modify the dose up or down as you best see fit.
Side Effects and Contraindications
Cistanche is generally very well tolerated.
Some people report upset stomachs or headaches when taking Cistanche. This can be related to the taste, most likely of those who are supertasters.
There is no evidence one way or another, so out of precaution, pregnant or breastfeeding women should avoid taking Cistanche.
