We continue the series on how to formulate using examples of Lost Empire Herb’s formulas to show the ideas behind how they were created.
In today’s post we address Mushroom Alchemy Tincture.

This one takes a little bit of a different track than some of our other tinctures in how we came up with the formula.
First up, there are seven different mushrooms in here. This includes:
- Chaga (Inonotus obliquus)
- Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum)
- Lion’s mane (Hericeum erinaceaus)
- Shiitake (Lentinula edodes)
- Maitake (Grifola frondosa)
- Turkey tail (Trametes versicolor)
- Artist’s conk (Ganoderma applanatum)
The first two, Chaga and Reishi, have been called the King and Queen of Mushrooms respectively. This is the principal pair of the formula. There are two parts of each of these (22%), as compared to one part of each other mushroom (11%).
One of the ideas I heard early on regarding the medicinal mushrooms was that there is synergy in them working together. That a blend make function better overall, for immune health particularly, than loading up on a single mushroom.
I haven’t seen any science yet that backs up this idea, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t true. It is a hypothesis worthy of testing and it does make sense. Since different mushrooms will work in different ways you’d be getting a more well-rounded effect.
I like to think of medicinal mushrooms as teaching your immune system to be more intelligent. This way you have a group of teachers rather than just one.
A big part of this tincture that sets it apart from just about anything else on the market is that it is spagyrically prepared. Spagyrics means plant alchemy, but here the same steps are applied to working to the fungi (in addition to the alcohol and water dual extraction that is especially useful in mushrooms).
In addition, alchemy is heavily tied into astrology. Before you write that off, you must know luminaries such as Sir Isaac Newton and Paracelsus, one of the fathers of Wester Medicine, were alchemists and thus into astrology too.
The seven inner planets (Sun, Mercury, Venus, Moon, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn…and yes, I’m aware that two of those aren’t planets in the modern sense) correspond to various bodily and psychological systems. They also correspond to the seven mushrooms in this formula.
- Sun – Reishi
- Mercury – Lion’s Mane
- Venus – Turkey Tail
- Moon – Maitake
- Mars – Chaga
- Jupiter – Shiitake
- Saturn – Artist’s Conk
I’ve only dabbled in Astrology personally but working with the man behind that prepares this formula we came up with this. (You can listen to more about this in my interview with him here.)
Like the herbal energetics we’ve discussed such as yin vs. yang and hot vs. cold, this is another framework from which to perceive that this formula is a complete set for holistic health.
Again, the quality of the ingredients and these added steps do make this more of a premium formula but our customers are saying it’s worth it.
